Blow Dry [M]

The Annual British Hairdressing championships are heading for the small town of Keighley and the country’s best are lined up to compete. All except the small town’s local hair legend Phil Allen. He dropped out of the competition circuit when his wife Shelly ran off with his model Sandra and left him with their son Brian. But now Shelly is determined to melt Phil’s icy attitude and what better way than to get him back in the competition. And who knows, a little cut and colour might be all that the hairdresser needs.

I had never heard of this movie. I came across it while I was sorting through the comedy section at work and brought it home, purely for the awesome cast that it has. What I discovered was that it was a really good comedy that was perfectly balanced between comedy, drama, and competition. I bought it straight away.

The annual British Hairdressing championships are coming to the small town of Keighley and the country’s best are lined up to compete. All except the small town’s local hair legend, Phil Allen. Phil dropped out of the competition circuit when his wife Shelly ran off with his model Sandra and left him to look after their son Brian. But now Shelly is determined to melt Phil’s icy attitude and get him back on top of his game. And what better way than to team up with him to compete in the competition? Who knows, a little cut and colour could be all that the hairdresser needs.

A refreshingly original story with many a twist of the plot, Blow Dry brings proof to the statement “the best films are the ones you’ve never heard of”. This film is witty, clever, charming, but at the same time, a little sad. It’s perfectly balanced.
Alan Rickman stars as Phil Allen and he was gorgeous. Bitter and wallowing in self-pity for the better part of the film, his performance was one that I just loved. I mean I love Alan Rickman in anything he does, but this film saw him with a subtle accent and a pair of golden scissors. Priceless.
Natasha Richardson stars as Shelly and she was beautiful. She was very tragic, but also very aggressive and determined and it’s lovely to see women be strong like that. You go girl!
Starring Bill Nighy, Josh Hartnett, Rachael Leigh Cook, and Rachel Griffiths, Blow Dry was a wonderfully refreshing comedy filled with glamour, drama, comedy, cheap tricks, and a healthy bout of competition. I absolutely LOVE this film!!!
