Singin' In the Rain [G]

The age of silent film is drawing to a close and “talking pictures” are all the rage. Don Lockwood is an actor making that bumpy transition from silent actor to speaking actor. When his first talking picture receives a less than friendly audience response, Don decides to turn the film into a musical, but there’s one problem: his lady co-star Lina does not the have the voice to match her looks. So Don hires his prospective ladylove to provide a voice for Lina, but it all has to be kept quiet so that Lina doesn’t catch wise to the plot.

One of the all-time classic Hollywood musicals, Singin’ In the Rain is a fabulous film filled with romance, jealousy, comedy, and is positively overflowing with singing and dancing.

The golden age of silent film is drawing to a close and “talking pictures” are all the rage. As Monumental Studios jumps onto the bandwagon, their shining star Don Lockwood finds himself struggling to make that bumpy transition from silent actor to speaking actor. When the studio’s first talking picture receives a less than friendly audience response, Don decides to turn the French revolution film into a musical so that it might be saved. But there’s one problem: the film’s leading lady, Lina, does not have the voice to match her looks. So Don hires his prospective ladylove, Kathy, to provide a voice for Lina. But it all has to be done in secret so that Lina cannot take affront and do something rash.

This was that Golden Age of Hollywood musicals where the song and dance numbers would never end and dominated the screen more than the dialogue. Everything is grandiose and exaggerated, which very effectively conveys the comedy and the romance of the film.
Gene Kelly stars as Don Lockwood and you have to love him. He’s charming, handsome, arrogant, and completely free-spirited. Not to mention the fact that’s is an amazing singer/dancer. The only other person who comes close to scaling Gene’s lofty heights is his co-star Donald O’Connor.
Donald plays Gene’s best mate and right hand man and he provides all the comic relief. He has all the best lines, uses all the film’s slapstick humour, and it’s impossible to take your eyes off him when he sings Make ‘Em Laugh. Love him!
Debbie Reynolds stars as Don’s ladylove, Kathy. She’s lovely isn’t she? Armed with her doll face, her high energy dancing, and her powerful singing voice, she’s ready for anything in this film.
Starring Jean Hagen, Millard Mitchell, Cyd Charisse, Douglas Fowley, and Rita Moreno, Singin’ In the Rain is a timeless classic Hollywood musical that’s packed to bursting with romance, jealousy, comedy, and non-stop singing and dancing. One of the greatest Hollywood musicals of all time, you simply cannot live out your entire without seeing this film at least once.
