It’s that time again, time for another epic conclusion. Of course, I am
referring to the much-anticipated final instalment in the new Star Wars trilogy: Rise of Skywalker. While I definitely enjoyed the movie more
than I did The Last Jedi, I have to
admit that I am just a little over the whole franchise: there’s a large portion
of the fan-base that is downright toxic, the narrative and character arcs have
not changed in over forty years, and the newer films ride strongly on the
nostalgia of the franchise rather than bite the bullet and try to make it
better and more adapted to modern cinema. I guess, if it still makes Disney
money, what’s the problem right?
Rise of Skywalker follows Rey (Daisy Ridley) and the remaining
members of the Resistance as they face the First Order for the ultimate battle.
As Rey learns some disturbing truths about herself, she and Kylo Ren (Adam
Driver) draw ever closer to meeting their destinies, coming face to face with
the ultimate choice at the farthest end of the galaxy.
After feeling so screwed
over by The Last Jedi I was really
wary of going to see this movie, but you have to right? But I am pleased to say
that I was surprised and more or less satisfied with how everything tied
together. There was a nice level of nostalgia woven throughout without making
my brain restructure them to the fit the frames of the originals, and overall
it really did feel like a Star Wars movie. So I definitely
appreciated that subtle emotional tug.
The stories all tie together well, though there are a lot big reveals
and revelations that just didn’t have the desired effect on me because I really
have not come to care about any of the characters. That and a lot of them felt
rather forced (no pun intended).
The film is balanced reasonably well between drama, action, and comedy,
and it’s done well enough that even though the outcome of events are totally
predictable and offer no real surprise, there is a small flutter of
suspense and anxiety that flits across the audience during some of the more dramatic
scenes and that’s good.

Ultimately, The Rise of Skywalker
is nothing special, but it is a relatively exciting and enjoyable final
instalment in the new Star Wars
trilogy, and after being so angered and screwed over by an oversaturation of nostalgia
in the previous one, I was pleasantly surprised by this and felt content when I
left the cinema. So well done everyone involved.
