Rock of Ages [M]

A small-town girl moves to Hollywood in search of fame, love, and music. She meets a talented boy who gets her a job at the Bourbon: the wildest, filthiest, incubus of hard rock and roll. Amidst the club’s struggling financial crisis, its constant attacks from God-fearing conservatives, and its crumbling reputation hinging on the performance of rock and roll’ most unreliable of gods, love blooms, love is lost, fame is found, and music is always playing; inspiring hope, love, pain, and power.

Hells yeah! In the name of all things delicious and sacred, THIS MOVIE FUCKING ROCKS! It’s one big, sweaty, orgy of fantastic costumes and makeup, sexy and memorable characters, and of course hardcore and immortal music. I’m sure as shit getting the soundtrack and adding the movie to my collection!

Ok, so the movie is really low on basic plot, but who cares? This was one of those rare films that you didn’t have to take seriously, you didn’t have to make sense of; you just had to let it wash over you like a really good song. The musical numbers aren’t always practical and there are some very obvious details that get neglected but, for me, Rock of Ages was just a brilliant and heartfelt rockin’ romp. Like being in a good nightclub and just losing yourself to the music, this movie just carried you through with no threats, no regrets; just pure, awesome enjoyment.
It’s a movie about rock and it would be so completely and monumentally wrong if I did not draw attention to the EPICALLY AWESOME soundtrack that is has. Set in the late 80s, there was only so much rock you could put in there, what with the pop craze about to hit. Although we find no Bowie or Quatro on the soundtrack, we still take immense joy in singing along with Guns N’ Roses, Joan Jett, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Jefferson Starship, and Journey. FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC!
The script is very funny with special scene-stealing congratulations going to Russell Brand and Tom Cruise, both of whom I just totally loved…though maybe not for the right reasons. And the punk, grunge, glamorous, and just totally rock and roll costumes were absolutely amazing!
Starring Diego Boneta, Julianne Hough, Alec Baldwin, Bryan Cranston, Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Paul Giamatti, Malin Akerman, Mary J. Blige, and Tom Cruise, Rock of Ages was a fantastically rock and roll movie that was packed with sex, romance, power, pressure, drama, comedy, and timeless music. It is definitely going into the collection, I LOVED IT!
