Chicken Run [G]

On the evil Tweedy farm, a clever and determined hen named Ginger dreams of a life of freedom for her and her friends. And while Mrs and Mr Tweedy fret over making minuscule profits, the chickens have been hatching brilliant escape attempts, with each one failing miserably. But when a smooth-talking American rooster named Rocky crash lands in their coop, the hens become quite excited because it seems that they may be able to escape after all and, with Rocky at their side, and not much time, they make one last daring and spectacular bid for freedom.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE! From the creators of Wallace and Gromit comes a timelessly clever and wonderfully funny family film that will put a smile on everyone’s face. Filled with memorable characters, brilliant film samples, and the odd classic pun, Chicken Run is one of the cleverest animated films to come out of this century.

On the evil Tweedy farm, a clever and determined hen named Ginger dreams of a life of freedom for her and her friends. And while Mr and Mrs Tweedy concoct evil schemes to gain more profit, the chooks have been hatching schemes of their own; each one unfortunately ending in failure. But when a smooth-talking American rooster named Rocky crash-lands in their coop, the hens get quite excited as, with Rocky behind them, they plot one last daring and spectacular bid for freedom.

It’s rather disappointing that there aren’t that many claymation movies around. Like stop-motion animation, it’s really rare to come by, which makes the movies that use it all the more engaging. The style of Chicken Run is just like that of Wallace and Gromit, with personified animals with wide, toothy smiles that are both funny but heart-warming.
The animation and the fact that it’s chickens plotting against evil humans will obviously appeal to the kids, but it’s the incredibly clever script and screenplay that will have the adults in fits of hysterics. The basic story and setup of the film is closely modelled on that of The Great Escape; in fact we even have a replica of that iconic scene of Steve McQueen throwing a baseball against the wall in solitary confinement. And then throughout the film there are a number of wonderful film references and samples, my favourite of which being towards the climax of the movie where the only Scottish chook says in that memorable way “a cling-on Captain!” Too add fuel to the fire, there are a great many puns and play on words that are just so wonderfully memorable; one particular one being how Rocky refers to himself as “the Lone Free Ranger”. COME ON! THAT’S CLASSIC!
Featuring the voice talents of Phil Daniels, Lynn Ferguson, Mel Gibson, Tony Haygarth, Imelda Staunton, Jane Horrocks, Julia Sawalha, Benjamin Whitrow, Timothy Spall, and Miranda Richardson and filled with action, adventure, memorable characters, suspense, and romance, Chicken Run is a fantastic film that should be in any movie collection. It’s absolutely brilliant!
In fact it’s…

Poultry in motion!
