Puss in Boots [PG]

Before Puss in Boots met Shrek, he was an outlaw looking to pay an old debt and clear his name. Upon hearing that nefarious outlaws Jack and Jill have gotten their hands on some magic beans, Puss sets out to steal the beans and, whilst doing so, his path crosses with that of an old friend: mastermind Humpty Dumpty. As they are both after the same thing, Puss joins forces with Humpty and street-savvy cat thief Kitty Softpaws, to plant the magic beans, climb beanstalk, and steal the legendary Goose that lays the Golden Eggs.

Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, Puss In Boots is a wonderful family film starring the devilishly charming and altogether adorable hired hit man from Shrek 2. It’s got all the action, adventure, romance, drama, and general atmosphere of a Zorro movie with the added bonus of fairytale and nursery rhyme characters and stunning animation. I loved this film!

Admittedly, a significant part of the story, if not all of it, was rather predictable, but who cares? It’s Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots. The clever script, the breathtaking animation, the voice talents, and the fact that the good guys are in fact, by technical definition, bad guys, makes this movie all the more enjoyable and completely makes you overlook the fact that can see what’s coming next. I have a soft spot for the dichotomy of films such as these. The name Puss in Boots now basks in the company of other notorious bad/good guys such as Zorro, Robin Hood, Cry Baby, and even (to a lesser extent) Megamind. It’s wonderful.
Featuring the voice talents of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton, Amy Sedaris, and Constance Marie, Puss In Boots is a wonderful family film packed with action, adventure, comedy, romance, dance, music, magic, and fractured fairytales. It’s just good, warm, heart filled family fun and I really did love it.
