Love & Other Drugs [MA]

Jamie is an irresistibly charming and relentless young man making a name for himself in the world of pharmaceutical sales. Maggie is a strikingly beautiful and free-spirited woman who refuses to let anyone or anything tie her down. What starts as a strictly sexual relationship between the two quickly escalates into something more and neither one is sure they can handle it.

It’s funny that I had never heard of this film before it came through in abundance at work. Anne Hathaway, being one of the few actresses whom I actually like, I simply had to hire this film just for her. I was amazed to discover that this was a really biting and fresh romantic comedy that was heartfelt, warm, funny, and harboured a great romantic message amidst all the sex. Filled with drugs, art, comedy, a great soundtrack, and romance, Love & Other Drugs was a really different film, one that I thoroughly enjoyed all the way through.

Jamie is an irresistibly charming and relentless young man making a name for himself in the world of pharmaceutical sales. Always pushing and never settling down, he has never made a real connection with another human being. That is until he meets Maggie, a strikingly beautiful woman with stage one early onset Parkinson’s disease who refuses to be tied down by anyone or anything. What starts as a strictly sexual relationship between the two soon escalates into something more and as both Jamie and Maggie begin to realise that they have feelings for one another, neither is quite sure that they can handle it.

The story was slow to start, but was romantic right from the off. I have to say that Jake Gyllenhaal who starred as Jamie was perfect for the role. He had a real magnetism and irresistible charm about him and he delivered a performance that was funny, teasing, charming, and delightfully manipulative. He is what holds your attention and keeps it until the actual story becomes evident. Great, great show.
I have to say that the chemistry between him and Anne Hathaway who played Maggie was spot on. They seemed to be completely natural and content in one another’s company and I think that they have made the best couple that I have seen on screen. Anne delivered a performance that was alluring, sparky, funny, but she could really be dramatic and delightfully melancholy at the best of times. A wonderful, wonderful performance!
Starring Hank Azaria, Oliver Platt, Judy Greer, Josh Gad, and George Segal, Love & Other Drugs was a delightfully fresh and witty film that was filled with drugs, romance, art, sex, comedy, and a great soundtrack. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.
