All About Steve [PG]

Mary Horowitz is unique: she doesn’t go out, she temporarily lives with her parents, and she works non-stop, creating crossword puzzles for a low-budget newspaper. To prove that she can be “normal” Mary goes on a blind date with Steve, a cameraman for a new channel, and she falls hard for him. Steve however, does not share her feelings. Convinced that they are destined to be together, Mary follows Steve all over America, learning one or two things about life along the way.

In the same week as winning the Academy Award of Best Actress for The Blind Side, Sandra Bullock won the Razzie for Worst Actress for this movie. And she actually accepted both awards! All About Steve was a cute, but ultimately ridiculous film that was filled with eccentricity, romance, self-realisation, and crossword puzzles. It has a couple of strong messages about being yourself and individuality and whatnot, but at the end of the day, it really was a stupid little film.

Mary Horowitz is unique: she doesn’t go out, she temporarily lives with her parents, she wears shiny red boots, and she never stops working; creating crossword puzzles for a low-budget newspaper. To prove that she can be normal, Mary goes on a blind date with Steve, a cameraman for a news channel, and falls hard for him. Steve however, does not share her feelings. Convinced that they are destined to be together, Mary follows Steve all over America, learning one or two things about life on the way.

This was a silly, camp, and pointless little film that, admittedly had some strong messages about acceptance and individuality, and gained one or two laughs, but at the end of the day, it was bad.
Sandra Bullock stars as Mary and she did the cutesy, eccentric, words-addict type thing rather well. In all fairness, there is no real way that you can play a character like Mary and not camp it up. Sandra pushed it just far enough to be somewhat believable, without the entire thing going off the rails. She deserved that Razzie.
Bradley Cooper, one of the most gorgeous faces on the screen at the moment, stars as Steve, and he was great, turning into more of a psycho than Mary. He started and finished being all charming and adorable, but somewhere in the middle he just went nuts. I still liked him though.
Starring Thomas Hayden Church, Ken Jeong, Howard Hesseman, and Beth Grant, All About Steve was a cute, but ultimately stupid film that was filled with sappy messages, eccentricity, romance, comedy, crossword puzzles, and memorable shoes. It was cute, but not a keeper.
