Back to the Future Part II [PG]

After making it safely back from 1955, Marty’s relief is short lived when the Doc arrives from the future and informs him that “something’s got to be done about your kids”. After travelling to 2015 and saving the McFly family from being destroyed, Marty and the Doc are shocked to discover that they have arrived in an alternate 1985 in which Biff Tannen is corrupt and powerful. They are then shocked further to discover that the Biff from 2015 stole the time machine whilst they were there and travelled back to 1955 to change the course of the future. In order to put the universe back the way they remember it, Marty and the Doc must travel back to 1955 and stop Biff from making his fortune. Will they succeed?

The second film in the trilogy, Back to the Future Part II was three times as rollicking than the first and twice as complicated. Nevertheless, it’s a fantastic science fiction film, a ride that the whole family can enjoy.

After making it back safely from 1955, Marty’s relief is short lived, as the Doc arrives from the future and tells him that “something’s got to be done about your kids”. After travelling to 2015 and saving the McFly family from being destroyed, Marty and the Doc are shocked to discover that they’ve arrived back in an alternate 1985, one in which Biff Tannen is corrupt and powerful and married to Lorraine, George McFly is dead, and the Doc has been declared legally insane. They are shocked further when they discover that whilst they were in 2015, the Biff from that future stole the time machine and travelled back to 1955 to change the course of the future. In order to put the universe back the way they remember it, Marty and the Doc must travel back to 1955 and stop Biff from making his fortune, all the while without being seen by their other selves or Marty’s parents. Will they succeed?

I’ve worked out that in this movie we travel through four different time frames. We start in the real 1985 then we go forward to 2015. Then we travel back to an alternate 1985 and then we travel back to 1955 again. Could this be the longest day of our lives?
In every trilogy, the second movie has to be the most rollicking and action-packed one. That is the truth with this film as well as Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. Practically everything happens in this film and sometimes it’s hard to remember where you are. But thankfully, because the screenplay remains the same as its predecessor, there are moments set aside in this film where the characters take a breather and verbally explain what is going on in the story.
This was also a film of dual roles: Michael J. Fox is Marty McFly as well as the Marty of the future, his son Marty McFly Jr., and his daughter Marlene. Christopher Lloyd plays two Emmett Browns and Thomas F. Wilson plays the Biffs of the future, the real 1985, the alternate 1985, and the past. It’s enough to make your head spin really.
Starring Lea Thompson, Billy Zane, Crispin Glover, and Elizabeth Shue, Back to the Future Part II is a fantastic rollercoaster ride filled with action, suspense, romance, violence, drama, déjà vu, and everything else in between. Definitely the most rollicking of all three, I absolutely love it
