I remember going to see this film in the cinemas years ago and completely loving it. It was such an original story with lots of humour as well as emotional lessons and stuff.
Dickie Roberts was a very popular and famous child actor, but when his show The Glimmer Gang was cancelled, his popularity and career fizzled out. As an adult, Dickie has been washed up for years. Everyone thinks he's an idiot, he can't get any acting gigs, and whatever love he had in his childhood has now completely flown. Dickie dreams of a huge comeback and as chance would have it, he finds it in a new Rob Reiner movie called Mr Blake's Backyard that has the power to take him from zero to hero.
"Like John Travolta and Pulp Fiction."
Whilst in an interview with Rob Reiner, Dickie is told that he would not be suitable for the lead role. Mr Blake is just a normal adult and Dickie is not normal in any way, having missed out on the basic foundation of adulthood, which is a childhood. Dickie then gets the brilliant idea to hire a family for a month so that he can gain childhood experiences and, by doing so, gain a shot of auditioning for this movie. However, the family he chooses are not so crazy about the idea.
David Spade is Dickie Roberts and he was great. Very funny, but also very sincere when the scene called for it. Some of the lines he comes out with just get stuck in your head."Insane in the membrane. Insane got no brain". With the aid of a very clever little script, David puts on a great performance as Dickie Roberts.
I think the greatest thing about this movie was all the cameos and that song at the end that all the famous child stars sing. It was so funny. You have all these adults that acted in shows like the Brady Bunch and Diffrent Strokes when they were kids and they're singing about how much they hate it when you call them by their character's names or greet them with their own catch-phrases. Here's a little sample of the song:
"Thank you for letting me in your living room to entertain you before bed. But if one more person calls me Marcia, I'll bust his fucking head!"
As I mentioned before, aside from the song, there are heaps of familiar faces in this movie. Alyssa Milano, Jon Lovitz, Brendan Fraser, Rob Reiner and heaps more.
A refreshing and original comedy, Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star is guaranteed to get you in a good mood every time. You'll be chuckling all the way through it.
"This is nucking futs!"
