Clash of the Titans (2010) [M]

Before there were Gods, Titans ruled and their reign was ended by their own sons. Now history is almost repeating itself as man wage war on the Gods in an attempt to end the Gods' reign and begin an age all their own.

A remake of the original Clash of the Titans, this film had only one redeeming feature: the cast. Someone needs to tell Louis Leterrier know that you cannot make a good movie out of a bad script, no matter who you've got on the cast list!

In the beginning Titans ruled. And then their reign was ended by their own sons: Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. Zeus persuaded Hades to create a monster that would defeat their parents. When this happened Zeus gained control of the heavens, Poseidon gained control of the seas and Hades, who had been tricked by Zeus, was sent to control the underworld. Zeus then created man and it was man's love and worship that fed the Gods immortality. It's years later and now man are growing restless and beginning to turn their backs on the Gods. They have even waged war against them to end their reign and begin the Age of Man. Hades has risen and has persuaded Zeus to let him loose amongst the city of Argos. To wreak havoc and punish those who have turned their backs on the Gods. However, Hades does not count on the fact that a demigod is in Argos: Perseus. With terror pouring in on them, the people of Argos turn to Perseus to save their city by defeating the monster that Hades created: the Kraken.

The whole ancient history setting is something that has been done time and time again, and admittedly, one always find something new in it with every retelling. As I mentioned earlier, this movie is a remake of a film from I don't know how many years ago and at some point during the film, I found myself asking "why?"
It's a good story, very easy to be made into a film. But I do think that adapting it so that it may appeal to a modern audience was a gamble that did not pay off. I have not seen a movie with such an annoying and crappy script since Troy, which I first saw almost 6 or 7 years ago and have not watched since. I think what really sent me over the edge, aside from the script attempting (and failing epically) to be funny in certain scenes, was that fact that they use a word as an insult, I don't know, a couple of hundred years before it was an insult!?
"Don't look this bitch in the eye."
WHAT!? I'm sure Perseus never used the word "bitch" to describe anyone in his life.
The special effects were pretty cool if you're into that sort of thing. But it was the cast and not the Pegasus that gave this thing whatever shot it had of flying.
Liam Neeson is Zeus. Good choice. Liam has the power to be commanding and sometimes intimidating, but there is a softness to him that was perfect for the part of Zeus.
Ralph Fiennes is Hades and he was awesome. I tend to love the bad guys in practically any movie so this could seem a little biased, but I think Ralph was the greatest thing in this flick. With his rasping voice and menacing entrances, he stole every scene he was in.
Then we have Sam Worthington playing the role of the hero: Perseus. I think it was sort of similar to his role in Avatar only not as cool. There was heaps of angry yelling and constant moving about throwing spears and wielding swords.
Gemma Arterton was lovely, as always. She has a very graceful air about her, which was perfect I suppose for the part she played. She actually looked like she belonged in ancient history.
Filled with other familiar faces, a hell of a lot of action and fighting sequences, mythical creatures, and lost of men's thighs, Clash of the Titans is an mythology themed action movie that I won't be seeing again unless on some strong strong wine-influenced impulse.
