Burt Munro is a man who has never let the dreams and spirit
of his youth fade. At an advanced age he still spends his days tinkering with
his old Indian motorcycle, coming up with inventive and innovative ways to make
it go faster and faster. He then determines to travel halfway across the world
to set a land speed record on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. But the trip
is threatened as more and more odds go against Burt and at times it seems that
even his irrepressible spirit and determination might wobble.
Based on one hell
of a true story (Burt Munro’s 1967 Bonneville record remains unbroken and the
man still a legend today), The World’s
Fastest Indian is a stunning New Zealand movie that harbours everything you
could want! It’s comedic, it’s dramatic, it’s romantic, it piques adrenaline
rushes, and it’s bursting with the unbreakable and empowering spirit and
determination that its central character embodies. A truly gorgeous film!

The story itself is incredible, this
cannot be denied. It’s a glorious tale of a single man’s determination and
indomitable spirit. It’s not so much about the setting of the new land speed
record, but more the depiction of a truly incredible man. Despite Burt’s age,
heart condition, and his hometown’s qualms that he can’t achieve what he sets
out to do, this man still goes out and follows his dreams (and I know how
clichéd that sounds, but it’s true). Further hurdles manifest in the form of
rude Americans, technical difficulties in desolate places, and restrictive
protocol, yet Burt manages to trek through it all with irrepressible spirit and
a character that gets under the skin of many people whom he comes into contact
with. His spirit is contagious and results in his gathering quite the band of
admirers and followers and it’s really, really
lovely to watch!
Anthony Hopkins as the man himself is absolutely gorgeous! You
cannot help but love this man! He brings this great innocence and heart to the
movie as well as various bouts of subtle comedy as he repeatedly corrects people
when they ask if he’s from England. He’s the salty and grime-hardened man with
a golden heart and it’s wonderful to watch him on screen.

Based on the incredible true story that I don’t think many people know about
(certainly I didn’t), it’s absolutely lovely!
