Years ago when they were 17 a group of friends embarked upon
an epic pub-crawl, which they never finished. 20 years later they reunite and
return to their hometown to have another attempt. But the night takes a turn
when they discover that the entire town has been repopulated with robots from
another planet and they have unwittingly become humankind’s only hope for
survival.
The blurb pretty much says it all right? The final instalment in the
Cornetto Trilogy, the two previous being Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz for
those who like me had no idea what the Cornetto Trilogy was, Simon Pegg and
Edgar Wright team up again and blow audiences’ heads off as it all comes to an
end. Critics have said that The World’s
End doesn’t stand up to its predecessors, but to be brutally honest, I
didn’t find Shaun of the Dead as
brilliant as I do now. Hot Fuzz is by
the far the standout of the three, but I think that The World’s End is definitely a movie that will get better the more
times it’s watched and for that reason, and the fact that I have the other two already,
it will most posilutely be making into my collection! I thought it was
brilliant!

The spontaneity and the randomness
that makes up a lot of the humour in these films is here in spades,
highlighting the more emotional story that fleshes out the film. At the end of
the day, this is a movie about growing up and deciding whether or not to accept
it. I don’t wish to give too much away, but what I really liked about this
movie was the ending and how there wasn’t the expected closure and epilogue
type thing that has come to be expected procedure in mainstream cinema. Just
like its predecessors, The World’s End
keeps you on your toes and guessing, finally leaving you with a sort of “wha?”
or “wtf?” feeling. It’s fantastic!
As far as action goes, it would be hard
running after Hot Fuzz, but this
movie manages to scale the heights. I haven’t revisited Hot Fuzz for a while, but I actually think this film overruns it in
being the most energetic and action-packed of the three. The fight sequences
were a thing of wonderment and the special effects were an image-imprinting
knock out as well.
And then we have all these wonderful familiar faces that
it’s great to look on again. Starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, David Bradley,
Michael Smiley, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, Eddie Marsan, Rosamund Pike,
Pierce Brosnan, and featuring the voice of Bill Nighy, The World’s End is a fan-fucking-tastic end the trilogy. Packed
with booze, action, robots, violence, explosions, romance, and emotional
journeys, holy rusted metal batman this movie rocks like a hurricane.
