Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit [G]

The first time she went undercover, Deloris Van Cartier was hiding from a murderer. Now she’s back in the habit for a new reason: the sisters of St. Catherine’s are in over their heads trying to teach in an inner city school that’s filled with rowdy teenagers. Resigned to help her “sisters”, Deloris puts on the “penguin” outfit and steps in as the new music teacher. It gets off to a shaky start, but when she discovers that her class has got talent, she becomes determined to turn them from the class from hell into the choir from heaven.

Admittedly it’s not as good as the first one, of course most sequels never are, but Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit is a very fine film that’s packed with sassy wit, clashing diva attitudes, great music, and heaps of comedy. It’s still a classic.

I think what really stands out in this film is the music. Appealing to wide audience of generational divides, the music brings both sides together with its great fusion of 90s hip-hop, street rap, 60s pop, and gospel. Throughout the film we hear memorable revamps of classic hymns and gospels as well as a bit of Martha and the Vandellas and James Brown. Whoopi, in a very clever and funny scene (one of my favourites), channels James Brown brilliantly, doing the whole fake collapse during her performance. That’s just great!
All our favourites from the first movie are here reprising their roles as well as a multitude of new characters that are equally just as loveable and memorable.
Starring Whoopi Goldberg, Kathy Najimy, Maggie Smith, Mary Wickes, Wendy Makkena, Bernard Hughes, James Coburn, Michael Jeter, Lauryn Hill, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Robert Pastorelli, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit is a funky and funny little sequel that’s filled with sassy wit, drama, great music, loveable characters, and plenty of feel-good comedy. Albeit slightly predictable, it’s still a film that has warm charm and certain irrepressibleness. I love it and really do enjoy going back to from time to time.
