The Bourne Identity [M]

A man is found half dead in freezing waters with two bullet wounds in his back. When he comes to he finds that he has completely lost his memory; he can no longer remember where he lives, his job, or even his name. From the scant clues he has he discovers that he is Jason Bourne a government assassin, but his identity is still clouded. It soon becomes apparent that Jason has to piece his past together fast as time is against him and there are assassins out there getting closer and closer to their target: him.

A cleverly constructed and completely engaging action-thriller, The Bourne Identity is a great movie that holds appeal for everyone. The story is fantastic with twists and turns everywhere for those who love a bit of intrigue, there is a generic romance, which works quite well for the action premise, and then there is plenty of action in all forms for those who love an adrenaline rush. All over, this movie is great.

The story is based on the novel by Robert Ludlum and adapted fittingly to screen by Tony Gilroy and W. Blake Herron. Right from the start, the story is what gets you in as we begin with nothing but mystery: a man found half dead in the water and then when he regains consciousness he has no clue who he is. Right from the off it’s a great display of character and audience alliance because both parties are in the same boat: with not clue as to what’s going on. Therefore we go right along with Jason on this journey of self-discovery, being equally as shocked and unnerved by each new discovery as he is. It’s a great plot, riddled with twists and turns, but what is really good about it is that it does not become completely resolved; even at the very end there is still a greatdeal of mystery surrounding the hero, which of course leads onto a sequel as this is only the first in a trilogy.
Matt Damon stars as Jason Bourne and he delivers a great performance, not adhering to the stereotypical form of an action star. Matt does the role with a wonderfully convincing sense of unease and caution and then when he delivers the action-y goods, he does it with surprising deftness and lethal clarity, making him a great action star.
Starring Franka Potente, Clive Owen, Julia Stiles, and Chris Cooper, The Bourne Identity is a fantastic thriller packed with action, romance, violence, car chases, and a great story. It’s a classic to be sure.
