Spider-Man [M]

Peter Parker was a shy, introverted, teenager, happily living with his Aunt and Uncle and secretly in love with the girl next door. But that all changed when, during a field trip, he was bitten by a genetically enhanced spider. Now, with heightened senses and impressive powers, Peter has become Spiderman, New York’s new superhero. But with every superhero comes a super villain and, not long after Spiderman’s appearance, a sadistic villain known as the Green Goblin begins terrorising the streets and killing mercilessly.

Out of all the Marvel studio comic book movies that they’ve made, Spiderman has to be my favourite. I was never a comic book gal, but I really do love this movie: I think that it’s perfectly balanced, not too action-packed or violent, the casting was great, it’s got an emotive and sometimes funny script, and it’s just a very feel good film. I can come back to Spiderman again and again.

This may be a bit of a shallow and probably stupid observation to make, but what the hell. I prefer the Marvel studio’s movies much more to the DC ones; the main reason for which is that the Marvel movies such as Spiderman, The Avengers, and The Fantastic Four are nowhere near as heavy as films say such as Batman Begins and the like. All the Marvel movies are armed with knockout special effects and action, but they are also generously proportioned with light-hearted comedy and witty banter. They are just the lighter movies by comparison, which I think is the better way to be as you don’t really need to be in a specific mood to watch them. They’re perfect all the time.
Spiderman is a wonderful movie balanced between gorgeous romance, rollicking action, and light comedic banter.
Toby Maguire delivered a great performance as Peter Parker/Spiderman. The change that he undertook was great and I think he was the perfect casting choice, giving a performance that was shy, a bit dorky, awkward, witty, and rather adorable.
I have to also say too that Willem Dafoe who stars as the villain was brilliant. Like Jack Nicholson, Willem is a very psycho looking man and his performance was sadistic, savagely funny, tormented, and delightfully wicked. I loved him.
Starring Kirsten Dunst, Rosemary Harris, Cliff Robertson, and James Franco, Spiderman is a wonderful movie that’s filled with action, romance, comedy, choice, change, and knockout special effects. It’s a really well-balanced movie and, as I said, I can come back to it again and again.
