In Her Shoes [M]

Sexy, flirtatious, party girl Maggie and plain, dependable lawyer Rose are sisters with only two things in common: DNA and their shoe size. Having always had a love-hate relationship for one another, their bond takes a sharp turn toward the hate side of the spectrum after the two have a bitter fight, which nearly severs their ties completely. Soon the girls realise that they both share a long-lost grandmother who helps them make peace with each other and themselves.

One of the most heart warming and tear-inducing adaptations of a novel that I have had the pleasure of seeing, In Her Shoes is a really beautiful film that harbours memorable performances, excellent casting, a lovely script, drama, comedy, and romance. It’s absolutely beautiful and one that I am very pleased to have in my collection.

Sexy, flirtatious party girl Maggie and plain, dependable lawyer Rose are sisters, friends, and rivals with only two things in common: DNA and their shoe size. Having always had a love-hate relationship for one another, their bond suddenly takes a sharp turn towards the hate end of the spectrum after the two have a bitter fight that nearly severs their ties completely. Soon, and completely by accident, the girls discover that they also share a long-lost grandmother who helps them make peace with one another and with themselves.

After watching the film, I shall have to read the book, because it is just a beautiful story with many, many layers that are each as intriguing as the one that came before. Not only is it a dramatic story about two sisters and their relationship falling on the rocks, but it is also a beautiful story of the healing power of time and self discovery and transformation. With such a strong story like that, the film was in no need of special effects or grandiose sets, but everything would hinge on the casting… and I have to say that the casting was perfect.
Toni Collette is Rose and she is just beautiful! A hard-working and loyal woman, close to a martyr and someone after my own heart, Toni delivered a moving and memorable performance and it was really beautiful to see the transformation that her character went through. She was just stunning; frustrated, abused, exhausted, trying, and just looking for some hard-earned happiness. She was absolutely beautiful.
Cameron Diaz stars as Maggie and I would have to say that I think this is the best thing that she has done (that I’ve seen of course). Normally, I’m not a very big Diaz fan, but I have to say that Cameron really rose to the challenge of playing Maggie; a tramp on the surface, but someone who suffers from strong inner battles. The chemistry between her and Toni was lovely and it must be said that although she played the egocentric and overly confident tramp role very well, she played the softer and more emotional role even better and it really was like seeing someone’s mask fall to the floor in slow motion.
Starring Shirley MacLaine, Richard Burgi, Candice Azzara, Brooke Smith, Mark Feuerstein, Ken Howard, Jerry Adler, and Francine Beers, In Her Shoes is a beautiful film that’s filled with comedy, romance, drama, self-loathing, friendship, and love. I love it, it really is a gorgeous film!
