Lilo & Stitch [G]

Lilo is a lonely little girl living with her sister on the lush Hawaiian Islands. Eager for a friend, Lila adopts what she thinks is an innocent puppy, naming him Stitch, completely unaware that he is in fact a dangerous genetic experiment that has escaped from an alien planet. Stitch’s only interest in Lilo is to use her as a shield to evade the alien bounty hunters that are after him, but whilst living with her little broken family, Lilo’s unwavering faith in ohana and good, touches his heart and gives him the one thing he was designed never to have – the ability to care for someone else.

Disney has done some beautiful and memorable films in the past from the undying romance of Beauty and the Beast to the heartbreaking and inspiring sense of pride and duty in The Lion King. But without a doubt, Lilo & Stitch is the most heart-warming film of the lot. It’s dramatic, funny, and wonderfully powerful. I love this movie!

On the surface, Lilo & Stitch is a fun family adventure filled with aliens and comedy, but the story is actually quite dramatic and heartbreaking. Lilo and her sister, Nani, are a broken family, having lost both their parents and Nani having to assume the role of breadwinner and guardian for Lilo. But their sister relationship naturally leads to difficulties and soon Nani is faced with the horrible truth that Lilo may be better off without her. The drama and the desperate circumstances that surround Lilo and Nani give the movie its poignancy and makes it all the more powerful as we see the girls struggle through and Stitch actually learn good from their efforts. It’s really beautiful, really powerful, and plays perfectly against the comedy that keeps the film a Disney family film.
Backed by its great animation and beautiful uplifting Hawaiian soundtrack, which also features classic hits from Elvis, and featuring the voice talents of Daveigh Chase, Chris Sanders, Tia Carrere, David Ogden Stiers, Kevin McDonald, Ving Rhames, Zoe Caldwell, Jason Scott Lee, and Kevin Michael Richardson, Lilo & Stitch is a wonderful family film that’s packed with action, adventure, memorable characters, family, and comedy. I for one could never get tired of it and it makes you want to live in Hawaii so bad!
