The Terminator [M]

In the year 2029, giant super-computers and machines dominate the planet, hell bent on exterminating the human race. To completely destroy man’s future, they send an indestructible cyborg, known as a Terminator, back in time to kill Sarah Connor, the woman whose unborn son will become mankind’s only hope. Can Sarah protect herself or will mankind be extinguished forever?

Yes, all right. I am going to come clean right now and say that, before today, I had never seen The Terminator. It’s one of those films that you just know like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, or The Godfather, and I just never had any real interest in seeing the movie. But, as it’s currently a personal project of mine to review my way through The Book, watching The Terminator was always going to be inevitable and I do have to say that I really did enjoy this movie! It’s good old-fashioned rollicking science-fiction fun balanced with action, comedy, and romance.

Can Sarah protect herself from her grim fate or will mankind be extinguished forever?

Aside from the obvious fact that Arnold Schwarzenegger was just a mindless mechanical hitman who was phased by nothing and delivered that great line “I’ll be back” before driving a car into a police station, I think what really sets The Terminator aside is the fact that it covers a whole heap of different genres and, therefore, can be enjoyed by a wider audience.
Obviously the science fiction aspect of the film comes in the form of the story: the cyborgs, the future, and the whole time travel thing. Then there is a romance story that blooms halfway through, which is admittedly rather predictable, but nice all the same. Obviously good ol’ Arnie delivers the action goods with mind-exploding gusto, really making the movie all about him and then, underneath all that fire, explosions, car chases, and general punch-ups, there lies a minor slasher movie that harbours a little bit of gore for those who care for it; e.g. the scene where the Terminator is “patching” himself up after one particular assassination attempt.
Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Biehn, Linda Hamilton, Paul Winfield, Lance Henriksen, Rick Rossovich, and Bess Motta, The Terminator is a rollicking and visually mind-blowing film that stands the test of time. Packed with action, great makeup and prosthetic effects, romance, drama, gore, comedy, and more action, it’s a real classic that really should not be missed!

I’ll be back.
