For four years the brave crew of the NSEA Protector embarked upon dangerous and thrilling adventures in deepest space… and then their show was cancelled. Now, twenty years later, aliens under attack have mistaken the Galaxy Quest TV transmissions for historical documents and have beamed the actors into the deep recesses of space so that they might help them save their people. With no script, no director, and no clue as to what they are doing, the actors now have to turn in the performance of their lives or else the universe is doomed.
My mum and dad showed this to me when I was younger and I have only just recently been reminded of how out-of-this-world and hysterical it was. It was an original story, had a genuinely funny script, and sported a lot of familiar faces.
For four years, the brave crew of the NSEA Protector – Commander Peter Quincy Taggart, Lt. Tawny Madison, Dr. Lazaurs, Tech Sgt. Chen, and Lorado – have embarked upon thrilling and dangerous adventures in deepest space… and then their show was cancelled. Spending most of their time at conventions and fan-based events, none of the performers have had a real acting gig since the show. But now, twenty years later, a race of aliens that are under attack have mistaken the TV episodes of Galaxy Quest for historical documents and have beamed the actors into the deep recesses of space so that they might help them save their people. With no script, no director, and no clue as to what they are doing, these out-of-work actors must now turn in the performance of their lives or else the universe is doomed.
What was particularly brilliant about this film was the casting. The cast is made up of Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Sam Rockwell. Tony Shaloub, Justin Long, and Daryl Mitchell. What a great line-up! It’s just such an interesting and somewhat mismatched group of actors, but it proves to be a recipe for hilarity and great entertainment.
Backed by its wonderfully clever and funny script, the film is an original story and also features great sets and special effects. And with wonderfully weird performances turned in by the actors who play the aliens, all systems are go for an incredibly fun and laugh-out-loud funny space adventure. Filled with action, egos, quarrels, romance, cannibalism, inter-species love, and rock monsters, Galaxy Quest is a wonderful film that will have you laughing out loud time and time again.
Being an Alan Rickman fan, I do need to say at this moment that he does steal every scene he’s in, but seriously, this film is a comedy classic. One that you can always come back to if ever you’re in doubt of what to watch. Absolutely brilliant!
