When Mitzi’s wife rings him out of nowhere begging for help, the shit hits the fan. Dragging Felicia and Bernadette along for the ride, the three queens unplug their curling wands and go bush, driving a big pink bus all the way to Alice Springs to do a couple of performances. But the road ahead is littered with bumps and rough patches and between the engine troubles on the outside and the constant bickering on the inside, it’s going to be a hell of a bumpy ride.
This is without a doubt one of my top ten favourite films of all time. It’s an iconic piece of Aussie cinema genius and it opened everyone’s eyes to a whole new world and changed the way people think and perceive those that are different. Positively groundbreaking, the film has a fantastic soundtrack, a wonderful story, brilliant actors, and one of the most memorable scripts of all time. LOVE IT!!!
When Mitzi’s wife rings him out of the blue begging for help, the shit hits the fan. Afraid of the hidden secrets that lie in Alice Springs, Mitzi reluctantly agrees to do a couple of performances at his wife’s hotel. Dragging Bernadette and Felicia along for the ride, the three queens unplug their curling wands and go bush, driving a big pink bus all the way from Sydney to Alice. But the road ahead is promised to be filled with troubles of many shapes and sizes and between the engine troubles outside and the constant catfights inside, it’s going to be a hell of a bumpy ride. One thing’s for sure though, the Red Centre won’t know what hit them!
This is Australian comedy at its very apex! I first must draw attention to the marvellous script that kept the film, as well as the audience, on its toes. Evenly balanced between comedic punch lines and more serious and dramatised scenes, Priscilla spawned some of the most memorable quotes in cinema history:
“A cock in a frock on a rock.”
"Now listen here you mullet. Why don’t you just light your tampon and blow your box apart? Because it’s the only bang you’re ever gonna get sweetheart!”
PRICELESS!!!
Hugo Weaving stars as Mitzi and he was absolutely gorgeous. Visually stunning, I have to mention his motions and gestures. Even the way he walked when he was not in drag radiated feminine glamour and confidence and it takes a very secure man to walk to like that! He was absolutely delightful from start to finish.
Terrence Stamp played Bernadette and you cannot help but fall in love with him completely. He provided the audience with the defiance, the drama, and the priceless punch lines that this film harbours. He really was the star of the show.
Guy Pearce plays Felicia and he was essentially the comic relief. Playing a remarkable self-assured glamour-puss seemed only second nature to Guy in this film and any girl who watches him in this movie will not be able to help themselves from screaming and swooning throughout. A gorgeous combination of comedy and eye-candy, I only wish I could half as beautiful as he was.
Also starring Bill Hunter, Priscilla won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design in 1994, and rightly so! The outfits in this film are effing amazing! Outrageous, glamorous, beaded, sequined, feathered, and everything else in between, you won’t be able to draw your eyes away from the screen.
Filled with knockout punch lines, memorable characters, drama, strong messages of acceptance, redneck fury, and the most awesome bus ever created, The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert is an iconic Australian comedy that will change the way you think as well as make your sides split. I EFFING LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!
"A desert holiday, let’s pack the drag away. You take the lunch and tea. I’ll take the ecstasy. Fuck off you sill queer. I’m getting out of here. A desert holiday, hip hip hip hip hooray."
