Three law-abiding women come up with a way to smuggle soon-to-be-shredded money out of the Federal Bank they work in. As they carry out their plan again and again, they develop a rather large fortune, but they’re about to learn that money doesn’t buy happiness. And as suspicious eyes begin to follow them, can they continue to get away with it?
It is the truth universally acknowledged that the films you’ve never heard of are ultimately the most fantastic films you’ve ever seen. This was a film that I had never heard of, but when it came into work it looked like a fun little comedy, so I pulled it out and watched it. I bought it straight away. It was great! Clever, wonderful actors, and an intriguing story. An unheard of gem.
After a year of seeing her husband fail at getting another job, Bridget gets a cleaning job a the Federal Bank and whilst there, she concocts a plan to smuggle money that’s faded and meant to be shredded out of the bank and into her pocket. Roping feisty single mum Nina and ditsy Jackie into the plot, the three develop a strong friendship and a vast fortune, using the “greenie” defence of “it’s not stealing, it’s recycling.” Swapping financial security for maximum security, the plan becomes endangered when suspicious minds start to wonder if all this clean money might hide a dirty secret. And with eyes following them all the time, can the unlikely heroines get away with it?
The main thing I loved about this movie was the friendship that formed between these unlikely women. Bridget is older, pampered, and smart. Nina is feisty, cautious, and a single mum. Jackie is cool, ditsy, and impulsive. They’re the complete opposites of one another and through this money smuggling caper, this strong friendship forms between them and it’s really lovely to behold.
Diane Keaton is Bridget. I thoroughly enjoyed watching her having her panic attacks and freak-outs. When she’s in a state of hysterics, she can be quite the comic genius. You go girl.
Queen Latifah is Nina. I absolutely love Queen Latifah. In anything she does, she has a presence. Even if she’s playing a minor role, she cannot be ignored. As a feisty single mum, she is forceful and stylish. A joy from start to finish.
Katie Holmes is Jackie. I have never really taken to Katie Holmes, but in this movie, I have to say that she’s my favourite character. She’s impulsive, stylish, cute, funny, and her performance really packs a punch. She was a gem in this flick. Filled with romance, suspense, freak-outs, and comedy, Mad Money was a wonderful little comedy about getting what you want. Well worth watching.
