Star Trek (2009) [M]

When a Romulan named Nero appears out of nowhere and threatens to destroy all the Federation Planets, it’s up to crew of the U.S.S Enterprise to stop him. However, there is a problem. Many of the crew on board the ship have only just completed, or are about to complete, Star Fleet training and Nero is no ordinary foe. Between the bickering of rivals Kirk and Spock and the destruction of planets by use of a black hole, this is going to be a long trek.

Alright, let’s clear the air and let me say that I have never seen an episode or a movie or anything remotely associated with Star Trek in my life. I’m more of a Star Wars girl. But with this movie, you don’t need to be a trekkie to understand it and enjoy it.

Out of nowhere appears a huge and intimidating Romulan ship that threatens all you come into contact with it. On board is a particularly nasty Romulan called Nero who seeks revenge and plans to destroy every Federation planet by creating a black hole at its core. With Vulcan being the first target, action needs to be taken. The newly-formed crew of the U.S.S Enterprise prepare to evacuate Vulcan and attempt to negotiate with Nero. However, the majority of the crew on board have only just or are only just finishing Star Fleet training and this turns out to be no ordinary mission. Between the bickering of rivals Kirk and Spock and the time limit that Vulcan has left, it’s going to be a long trek.

I suppose it does help if you know all the characters of the series, but even so it’s not such a big deal if you don’t. I mean, I know absolutely nothing about Star Trek and I enjoyed this film immensely. It’s packed to bursting with action, romance, suspense, and wonderful characters.
Chris Pine is James T. Kirk. He was great. Arrogant, sporting a huge ego, and really annoying when he wanted to be. I usually don’t really take to those sorts of characters, but I did enjoy watching Chris.
Although Chris is more or less the star, my eyes were always on Spock played by Zachary Quinto. He’s so adorable. Neutral on the surface, but if you look really closely you can see the inner struggle and conflict. I loved Spock in this movie.
The characters that are known and loved are thrown into the mix here with wonderful and recognizable actors playing them. Eric Bana is Nero, Karl Urban is Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, Zoe Saldana is Nyota Uhura, Bruce Greenwood is Christopher Pike, John Cho is Hikaru Sulu, Simon Pegg is Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, and Winona Ryder as Amanda Grayson. The special effects are mind-blowingly awesome. Between the amazing ships and the battles that take place, I don’t know which is more gripping. It’s certainly is a ride. A journey through space and time and filled with action, romance, suspense, drama, and comedy, Star Trek was a fantastic film that anyone can enjoy.
