Based on a true story, Kinky Boots is a wonderful British comedy about self-discovery, manliness and, of course, glamorous shoes. When Charlie Price’s father passes away, it’s expected of him to take over the family business of making men’s shoes.
After getting off to a shaky start, Charlie soon discovers that the factory is in danger of going bankrupt. Then, one night in London, Charlie saves a drag queen named Lola from a gang of thugs and, by so doing, comes up with an idea that might save the factory: making women’s shoes that are strong enough to support the weight of a man. So Charlie decides to take an almighty gamble in changing Price’s product, and with Lola as his shoe designer, it’s going to be a very interesting ride.
This definitely has to be one of my top ten favourite movies. It’s absolutely perfect. There are colourful and loveable characters, wonderful and witty humour, a great soundtrack with the actor actually singing, and unbelievably sexy shoes.
Joel Edgerton is Charlie Price and he’s just so cute. He has a look of constant confusion on his face the entire time. It’s adorable really. There is one part in the film though, that I don’t really like. Charlie is having dinner with Lola and an argument occurs. To me, it just seemed so out-of-the-way of Joel’s character. It was like we were looking at someone different. I don’t really know how to describe it, but there was this sudden and aggressive change that just did not fit with the character of Charlie. Aside from that, though, he was perfect for the role.
Chiwitel Ejiofor is Lola. GORGEOUS!!! Absolutely gorgeous. Most of you will probably remember Chiwetel from Love Actually where he plays Kira Knightley’s husband, and to see him here in sexy thigh-high patent leather boots with a wip and wearing a beautiful dress and wig is literally stunning. He was charming, sensitive, insightful, and immensely glamorous. Not to mention, he sings!
Backed by a wonderfully clever script and familiar faces such as Nick Frost, Jemma Rooper, Sarah-Jane Potts, Linda Bassett and Robert Pugh, Kinky Boots is a beautiful comedy that proves that the only way to fit in is to stand out.
