Practically everyone I know was brought up watching The Goonies. I was 18 the first time I saw it. It's one of those 80s classics that was original and free. Seriously, you look at PG movies today and practically none of them will use the word "shit" even once!
The Goonies are a gang of friends who have been on many an adventure together. But now they're about to be split up because their houses are about to be knocked down. Wanting to make the most of their last weekend together, the gang meets up at Mikey's house and go through his father's attic to see if there's anything of value that they can keep from the Museum where his father works. When they come across an old map that leads to buried treasure, they decide to go on a quest to find this treasure and maybe save their houses. But whilst following the trail that the map details, they get mixed up with some wanted criminals and now they're desperately trying to stay one step ahead and beat the bad guys to the treasure. What started out as a boring last weekend soon turns into the adventure of a lifetime.
Like the original Star Wars movies, The Goonies has no expiration date. It's a perfectly balanced and original film. It's an original story, has a very funny script, has wonderful and lovable characters, has the right balance of swashbuckling action and romance, and is filled with instantly recognisable, albeit very young, faces like Sean Astin and Josh Brolin.
The Goonies is written by Steven Spielberg and is a complete joy to watch even 20 years later. Full of swashbuckling action, surprises around every corner, young love, booby traps, a pirate ship and hidden treasure, The Goonies is just a rollicking movie filled with dizzy fun movie for the whole family.
